Troy Evans Bain Obituary

Shreveport, Louisiana - Troy Evans Bain

September 9, 1936 - March 16, 2026

A force in the northwest Louisiana legal community, Troy Evans Bain rested his final case on March 16, 2026, after an illustrious career as a highly respected trial attorney who fought for the underdog, was a staunch supporter of women's rights, and champion of the civil rights movement. He was also an avid outdoorsman and LSU fan, politico, and running enthusiast, having completed 18 marathons.

Born as the only child of Troy and Lois Bain on September 9, 1936, Troy was a standout high school athlete in Vivian, Louisiana, who made his way south to LSU where he lettered in pole vaulting, served as President of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and met the love of his life, Katherine (Kay) Conger. The two became lifelong partners in adventure for 63 years, and the parents of four children: John, Randy, Katherine and Debbie.

Armed with a degree in chemical engineering, Troy quickly realized that his love for logic and skill of arguing might lead to a better career path. Remember, he was an only child who was fiercely independent, always had an opinion, and wanted his voice heard. So Troy stayed at LSU, earned his law degree, then moved with Kay to Shreveport where they started their family and he began his legal career.

Over the years, Troy established himself as a formidable attorney who was masterfully skilled in the courtroom. Throughout his career, Troy was a passionate advocate for the disadvantaged, tirelessly fighting powerful institutions on behalf of those who had been harmed by their actions. His expertise led to him serving as President of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association.

Troy successfully tried many monumental medical malpractice and personal injury cases, including the landmark class action lawsuit against a former creosote plant that operated in Bossier City. That settlement benefited neighbors living in the area who fell ill and led to a classroom wing addition at Plantation Park Elementary.

Defined by more than just a love for law, Troy also had a penchant for politics. As a primary architect of legislative change, he was most notable for successfully lobbying to amend Louisiana's wrongful death statutes and serving on the front lines of tort reform. He was also an avid supporter of many political campaigns for candidates who shared his passion for civil rights and gender equality.

Still, another side to Troy was the great love he had for his family and exploring the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Every winter the Bain family skied, every summer they backpacked, with every mile of their trip accompanied by the music of Willie, Waylon and the boys. His children can thank their father for knowing most of the lyrics to those songs - and having them on their own playlists. They will forever recall memorable moments on mountain trails and ski slopes, laugh about the long van rides and Troy's crazy driving, and share stories about his penny-pinching ways and irreverent sense of humor.

Preceded in death by his parents and oldest son John, Troy is survived by his beloved wife, Kay; his son, Randy Bain and wife, Sonja; daughter, Katherine Bain; and daughter, Debbie Brickley and husband, Jason. He also leaves behind his three cherished grandchildren: grandson, Jackson Bain and granddaughters, Leila and Charlotte Brickley.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Troy's caregivers at Serenity's Heart Homecare and the staff at The Chateaus at Montclair, who have become extended family members over the past three years.

A celebration of life for Troy E. Bain will be held Monday, March 23, 2026 at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and a funeral service at 11 a.m. A graveside ceremony will immediately follow at Forest Park Cemetery, 3700 St. Vincent Avenue, Shreveport.
