James Marshall Jones III Obituary

Louisville, Colorado - James Marshall Jones, III, a resident of Louisville, Colorado, died in his sleep on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in Bradenton, Florida, as a result of sudden cardiac arrest ("SCA"). Marshall was visiting his oldest daughter, Piper Jones, who attends IMG Academy in Bradenton. He was 46.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, at St. Mark's Cathedral, 908 Rutherford Street, Shreveport, La., with The Very Reverend Alston Boyd Johnson, Dean of the Cathedral, officiating. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service.

Marshall Jones III was born on April 30, 1979, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was named for his paternal grandfather, James Marshall Jones, Sr. Marshall attended St. Mark's Cathedral School, Loyola College Prep, and graduated from "The City of Byrd," C.E. Byrd High School. Marshall then matriculated to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, completed his B.S. degree, and graduated from SMU in 2001.

Throughout his youth, Marshall was considered to be an elite athlete who played multiple sports. Marshall was a star soccer player for many seasons on the Cabosa/Shreveport United "select 1979" soccer team. In his junior year of high school, Marshall was recruited to play "striker" for the New Orleans "Jesters U-19," which was comprised of some of the best U-19 high school soccer players from throughout the Gulf Coast area. The "Jesters U-19" played highest-level competition throughout the United States and earned a top national ranking. We all marveled watching Marshall's many "hat-tricks" during his athletic career.

During a 23-year professional career, which continued until his death, Marshall was employed in the fossil fuel industry. In 2004, Marshall and his growing family moved from Shreveport to the Boulder, Colorado, area to open a new office on Pearl Parkway in Boulder for a Shreveport-based independent energy company with operations in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. In July of 2021, Marshall became the President of family-owned Jones Energy Company, L.L.C. and, with his father, helped build a successful exploration company operating primarily in the "Haynesville Shale" of North Louisiana.

Marshall was a lifelong sportsman, outdoorsman, and conservationist, and he was an avid duck hunter, fisherman, skier, and golfer. His love of skiing was nowhere more apparent than at Granby Ranch, Colorado, where Marshall cherished skiing frequently with his family and friends.

Marshall's love of the outdoors was apparent, as well, as he spent his lifetime at the Jones Ponderosa, his family's farm and cherished refuge located on the North Shore of Caddo Lake in both Texas and Louisiana. At the Jones Ponderosa, Marshall introduced his children and many of his friends to life in the outdoors that he loved so much. From an early age, Marshall also supported the conservation/environmental efforts of the Caddo Lake Institute, Inc. to preserve and protect Caddo Lake, a wetlands of international importance. Marshall considered Caddo Lake to be "his church."

Marshall was widely loved and admired by family members and his countless friends. Marshall was unflinchingly honest, courageous, loyal, and sincere. Marshall's smile could light up a room. His mind was insanely cool. His kindness was remarkable. He was everyone's favorite person. Most importantly, Marshall well understood the axiom that no matter how rich, cool, educated, or talented you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all about you.

Loving and dedicated to his family and friends, Marshall's greatest love he reserved for his wife of 18 years, Jamie Tyler Jones. Marshall passionately loved Tyler, and he was steadfastly devoted to her. It was Tyler, Marshall's partner in life, that gave him his greatest joy - Marshall's and Tyler's four beautiful daughters: Piper (17); Dossett (14); Jolie (12); and Navy (5). Marshall and Tyler took great delight in each daughter's academic and athletic endeavors. Although Marshall's untimely death is incredibly sad and tragic, his constant loving embrace of Piper, Dossett, Jolie, and Navy has already made a pivotal difference in their young lives that will continue indefinitely. Marshall was the ultimate "girl dad."

Marshall also greatly loved other important women in his life, including his mother, Amie Bolton of Natchitoches, Louisiana; his beloved grandmother, Barbara Dossett of Shreveport, Louisiana; and his two loving sisters, Emilie Jones Steinberg (Ethan) of Wilson, Wyoming, and Katherine Jones Dunman (Michael) of Dallas, Texas.

Marshall is also survived by his father and best friend, James Marshall Jones, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia Thompson Jones of Shreveport, Louisiana, as well as his nieces and nephews, Ella Amie Steinberg, Lily Margaret Steinberg, Oliver Brown Steinberg, and Adger James Steinberg, all of Wilson, Wyoming; nephew, Peyton Alexander Bolton (Reagan) of Natchitoches, Louisiana; and niece Winter Rose Pecora of Centerport, New York, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Marshall was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, James Marshall "Bubba" Jones, Sr. and Joan Coughlin Jones; his maternal grandfather, Brown Dossett; and his step-father, Thomas Alexander "Tommy" Bolton.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are the following twenty-one (21) friends: John Beach; Ronnie Boudreaux; Alex Branca; Connor Burke; Jacob Corbell; Michael Dunman; Chris Hall; Andy Heard; Gene Hilliard IV; Sutton Lloyd; Tim Martinez; Michael McKenzie; Dan Mellish; Burt Ogilvie; Justin Pecora; Christian Pendley; Ethan Steinberg; Tracy Toups; Don Weir, III; Wynn Wilhite; and Steve Vidiac.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Caddo Lake Institute, Inc., c/o 400 Edwards Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71101, or online at caddolakeinstitute.org.

To James Jones, III, aka "JAMAJO III": "Thank you for your love, your friendship, your kindness, and your laughter. Your life was unique and extraordinary. You will forever be in our hearts, until we meet again."
